Born in Milan, Italy, in 1939, began studying the guitar at a very early age, initially under his father’s guidance and eventually with Miguel Abloniz, then completing his musical studies at the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory in Milan.

In 1955 he won the first prize at the Modena International Guitar Competition.

In 1956 Minella met Segovia for the first time. He was invited to study with the great Spanish Master at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena in Italy and, in the following years, at Santiago de Compostela, Spain, at the University of California in Berkeley and at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston Salem, USA.

It was during the Berkeley Master Class that he made his American debut in the Hertz Hall of the University of California. In a New York Times interview in February 1968, Segovia named Aldo Minella as one of “the four second generation artists to whom he is proud to pass the burden of keeping the guitar respectable”.

Minella has performed in Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan.

He also has appeared on radio and television and in concertos with orchestra, receiving the unanimous praise from the international public and critics.

“He is an artist of rare sensitivity and style”, writes the Washington Evening Star, adding “his control of dynamics in particular is absolutely outstanding, with a pianissimo sound that is breathtaking. It is the sort of unusual dynamic control that Vladimir Ashkenazy is noted for at the piano and a feat that few artists achieve”.

Aldo Minella has recorded for Omnia Music, PDU, Philips, Ricordi and recently for M.A.P.,  two CD titled “Omaggio a Segovia” and “Ponce-Villa Lobos”.

Minella has been teaching at the Civica Scuola di Musica of Milano, at has conducted several Master Classes in Italy and abroad, included the one at the Juilliard School of New York, during one of his concert tours 2002 in the USA.
